About Play Therapy
Play therapy is an internationally recognized, evidence-based approach designed specifically for the developmental needs of children. While adults use words to process their world, play is a child’s natural language and toys are their words. This specialized practice creates a safe, non-threatening environment where children can explore their inner world, work through emotional challenges, and build essential coping skills without the pressure of traditional talk therapy.
The Process: A Wrap-Around Approach
Due to nature of this work and the importance of the therapeutic environment, all play therapy sessions are held exclusively in-person at my Madison office. In order for your child’s healing to have lasting effects, it is important to engage in change beyond the playroom.
-
Our journey begins with a 50-minute, parents-only session that can either be in-person or virtual. It is a dedicated space for us to speak freely about your child’s history, your current concerns, and our goals for therapy before your child ever enters the playroom.
Following our parent meeting, I will meet with your child for their first session. This is typically a child-only space to help them begin building their own relationship with me and the playroom. However, depending on your child's needs, I may invite you to join us so I can observe the parent-child interaction and ensure everyone feels safe and supported from the start.
After both meetings, we will review and collaborate on a path forward that best supports and nurtures your child.

Once the intake process is complete, your child will begin weekly 50-minute sessions. Consistency is essential for building the felt safety required for a child to move through their big feelings and worries and practice skills.

Active caregiver participation is a required part of my practice. The frequency and format of this support are tailored to the unique needs of your child and family. This may include parent-only consultations every 4 to 6 weeks (in-person or virtual), child-parent relational sessions to strengthen your bond, or school consultations to ensure your child feels seen in every environment.
